Do not generalise one beach’s conditions to the whole coast
DBCA’s fact sheet specifically warns that outside Greens Pool this stretch of coast can be hazardous because of large, unpredictable waves and swells, slippery rocks and strong currents. A calm image taken on one day does not describe the conditions you will encounter.
Stop and observe the ocean, keep away from slippery or loose surfaces and follow every current sign. Supervise children at all times. If access appears affected by water or conditions, do not force a route for the sake of a view or photograph.
Give yourself permission to turn back
Check weather, alerts and ocean conditions before deciding where to walk or swim. DBCA advises visitors to tell a responsible person their expected return time. A safer plan also includes suitable footwear, drinking water and enough daylight to avoid hurrying.
There is no universal assurance that a cove, rock shelf or swimming spot is safe. Conditions can change quickly, and the decision to stay back or leave is often the most important part of the visit.
- Watch the ocean rather than turning your back on it.
- Avoid slippery rocks and loose surfaces.
- Supervise children continuously.
- Follow signs, closures and ranger directions.
- Tell someone your plan and turn back when conditions are unsuitable.
